Celtic now have competition if they want to land a striker they are interested in, as Rangers are now likely to make a move.
In the January transfer window, Leeds United striker Joel Piroe held talks with the Celts over a potential loan move. As we know, this didn't end up happening, with the move being "laughed off" due to Rangers and Leeds having the same owners, and now the Gers are reigniting their interest for the summer.
The 26-year-old is considered part of Daniel Farke's core group of players, which is part of why he wasn't allowed to leave in January, but it is becoming increasingly more difficult for him to get minutes under his belt. With Leeds looking likely to stay in the Premier League for next season, they will strengthen, and that could pave the way for Piroe to leave.
Rangers have the advantage, but Celtic aren't out
As we all know, Rangers and Leeds are both owned by the 49ers. That close link between the two clubs could make it easier to get a deal over the line. Our interest in the striker was reportedly "laughed off" because of the link, but with Celtic apparently still in for him, it clearly hasn't put the club off.
Maybe that was simply misleading news, as the player seemed eager to stay anyway. In the summer, it's going to be a whole different story, and in football, anything can happen.
Currently, Celtic have Tomas Cvancara, Junior Adamu and Kelechi Iheanacho in the striker position, with Johnny Kenny out on loan to Bolton Wanderers.
Cvancara wants a permanent move, but some supporters aren't convinced by him yet. Adamu is likely to return to his parent club upon the conclusion of his loan. Iheanacho has been told that he will need to do a lot to prove himself if he wants a year added to his expiring contract, but that seems unlikely at this point.
This would mean that Celtic start next season with either one, maybe two strikers, or none. A move for a frontman should be the first one sanctioned, but it's still up in the air who the club will go for.
The Celts are also interested in securing the services of young forward Ali Avila. He has six goals in 10 games this season, and scouts have been keeping watch on the striker. We are reportedly going to send even more staff to take a look at him prior to the summer window opening.
There is no doubt Piroe would be a brilliant move, but we may have to look elsewhere if our bid is rejected in favour of Rangers. At Celtic, you can't chase for too long, especially if what you are chasing are your bitter rivals.
