Heading into the summer, it was clear that Celtic needed a major squad overhaul. Signings were required in a number of positions. While the club have made some additions to the squad, there are still quite a few positions that require strengthening.

Also, bringing in players quicker could have made a difference. Kyogo Furuhashi and Carl Starfelt have both been signed but they could not feature in the FC Midtjylland tie. And one has to wonder if they could have made a difference if they had arrived a bit earlier.

Of course, it is difficult to get things done, especially under the current circumstances and some patience is required. But the club have now failed to make the UEFA Champions League group stage for the fourth straight season and they need to bring an end to that streak as soon as possible.

As reported by Glasgow Times, Ange Postecoglou said regarding the situation:

"“I’m the person who has been put in charge.“We haven’t got players in. Obviously I haven’t done a good enough job convincing people we need to bring people in.”"

The manager believes that it was not the ideal situation going into the tie against FC Midtjylland:

"“The challenges we’ve had are well chronicled, but irrespective of the result, we had a really young squad out there with young players on the bench, that’s not the situation we need to be in.“Maybe I wasn’t clear enough, I don’t know. I think I’ve been pretty consistent in saying we need more players in.“The club is working hard to get players in. We talk endlessly about the challenges we are facing.“For our supporters they just want to see us bring reinforcements in that we need.”"

Celtic need to strengthen in a number of positions

There are a number of positions in the squad that the Hoops need to strengthen in moving forward. It is arguable that they need to make signings at goalkeeper, right-back, left-back, centre-back, central midfield, left wing and striker.

That is a lot of work to be done. Of course, there is over a month left in the transfer window and it is not impossible. But the season is already underway and things will need to be done as soon as possible.

One can only hope that Furuhashi and Starfelt are able to hit the ground running. Both of them can be vital players this season in two of the most important positions in the team. If they settle in quickly and start delivering, the start of the league campaign might become a bit easier for Postecoglou.
