Celtic seem to have two primary links right now. Chelsea’s Charly Musonda has been an exciting prospect, and Jack Hendry has reportedly caught the eye of Brendan Rodgers over the past month.

The need for defense has been hammered into fans’ brains ever since Marvin Compper went down with an injury. Add in the fact that Erik Sviatchenko will serve the rest of the season out on loan, and the Celts could have some issues on the back-line.

Celtic were linked to Hendry before all of the news above even transpired. Rodgers has promised at least one signing before the end of the window, and Hendry looks to be the prime target.

Several reports claimed that the Bhoys made a bid on Hendry, but Dundee boss Neil McCann turned down what he claimed was a “low offer”. The Championship side also slapped a 1.5 million pound price tag on the defender, which is double his market value.

Here’s what McCann had to say to HITC:

"“There’s been a bid, a low bid, very low, but nothing since,” McCann told Sky Sports. ”I would think there would be more interest in the player but clearly they were told it wasn’t enough and that will be the message if it continues in that vein.”"

It could be suggested that the Hoops tried an offer of near his 500,000 pound value, but Dundee remained strong with their price. Rodgers has been rumored to go in with a second bid for the young Scot.

All of this comes with a bit of skepticism from Sky Sports’ pundit Stephen Craigan, who says that Hendry may not be first-team quality at Paradise. HITC went on to take an excerpt of what the pundit had to say, when listing that:

More from The Celtic Bhoys

"“The question would be if Brendan Rodgers wants to build a side to win the Europa League or even go far as he can in the Europa League, to build for Champions League next year, will Jack Hendry strengthen that pool of players?“Maybe the pool of players, but I don’t think he will strengthen the first XI. I don’t think he can get into the first XI at this moment in time.“If Brendan has eyes on the bigger prize, which he will have, long term I don’t think he will be the answer for Celtic, but he certainly is one of the best young centre-halves in Scotland.”"

Chances in the Europa League are in serious doubt at the moment especially with Craig Gordon going down with an injury. Zenit are a tough match, and the Celts will have to boast the best starting eleven possible.

Craigan may be right that Hendry isn’t necessarily starting quality right now, but it’s all about building players for the future.

Plus, the Celts have to start compacting players that can compete in European competition. The Europa and Champions leagues are nothing like the Scottish Premiership, and everybody in Glasgow has to realize that.

However, it’s a gamble worth taking on the 22-year-old. The same goes for Musonda. Both are young players with enormous potential that can hopefully help Celtic compete in Scotland and beyond for the time ahead.
