Comparing James Tavernier to Kieran Tierney is hilarious
By Nick McAdam
In the world of football today, there’s always going to be comparisons as to who is better than who. Sadly, some fans would rather compare some of football’s greats rather than watch them create magic.
One of the most notable comparisons that everybody has likely heard is the debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s a discussion that seemingly never ends, and will likely continue until the day the two legends retire.
Celtic players rarely get compared to other football players it seems. Recently, however, the bet365 made a rather humorous comparison between Kieran Tierney and James Tavernier.
The tweet notes that if you retweet you support Tierney, and if you like the post you’re all for Tavernier. Shockingly or maybe not so (depending on fans beliefs), Tavernier blew Tierney out of the water.
However, Rangers and Celtic fans alike shouldn’t believe the conclusion this post generated. First, most know that in general, a tweet is going to generate more likes than retweets. In this case maybe Tavernier was the more supported defender, but that seems hard to believe.
It’s not so much that the Rangers’ right-back is bad, but he can’t really compare to what Tierney has to offer. To extend further, the comparison between the two doesn’t even come close.
Tavernier has been with a variety of clubs throughout his career. Interestingly, all of the defender’s recent clubs came from England which include sides such as Newcastle United. Rangers are the first club that Tavernier has featured for in Scotland.
Both defenders have the same amount of contributions on the season thus far. Tierney has 3 goals and 7 assists, while Tavernier has 4 goals and 6 assists. However, Tavernier didn’t get to star in the Champions League and produce, just like Tierney did.

The 20-year-old also made the Champions League best XI for the group stage alongside Neymar, Ronaldo and Samuel Umtiti. It’s crazy to think that the Bhoys got hammered in goals against in the Champions League, but Tierney was so impressive that he still made the notable squad.
Plus, Tavernier is hitting his prime at the age of 26. The fact that Tierney – who is six years younger – still produces just as much as Taviernier in tougher competition shows that Kieran is world class at his age.
Tierney remains very loyal to the Hoops as well. He bleeds green through and through, and it shows in his contributions off the pitch. Tierney has done so much for the Celtic Foundation, and was recently named an ambassador for it.
To show that he can do it both on and off the pitch shows how commited he is to fans and to Brendan Rodgers‘ plan. Rodgers even handed Tierney the captain’s armband a few times throughout his young career.
Again, it’s not so much that Taviernier is bad at what he does. Rangers have solid right defender in the 26-year-old that will help progress their backline for years to come. Yet, Tierney is on a whole different level.
Kieran can be argued as the best player in Scotland at the moment. Unless somebody can make a run for the best in the country, nobody should be compared to what Tierney has to offer.
