Celtic: What’s next for Ross Doohan?

Celtic have several players rumored to be in and out of the club this January. Some moves are permanent, but other’s futures are yet to be determined.

So far, the Hoops seem to be very keen in loaning some of their younger players out for further development. The idea is pretty simple with loaning; trying to acquire more playing time that can’t be achieved with the Bhoys.

Recent talks have suggested that Celtic might loan out Kundai Benyu, while newest addition Lewis Morgan will join the Celts next season so he can finish the rest of the season with St. Mirren on loan. Even Antonio Conte has considered loaning out Celtic target Charly Musonda from Chelsea.

Loaning seems more important when it’s involving goalies. Ross Doohan recently completed a loan spell with Morton in the Scottish Championship. However, the loan seemed kind of pointless as Doohan didn’t make a single appearance, as Celtic Quick News points out.

"The Scotland Under-21 shotstopper arrived at Cappielow in August, but didn’t make a single appearance for the Championship side.Boss Jim Duffy is now searching for back-up for regular Derek Gaston with Jamie McGowan out with a dislocated shoulder. He said: “Celtic are keen to have Ross back, so St Mirren was his last game involvement with us. He goes with our best wishes for the future."

At the age of 19, regular minutes in net for Doohan will be very difficult to achieve. Plus, competition at the keeper position looks competitive as Craig Gordon, Dorus de Vries and Conor Hazard all rank higher on the depth chart.

More from The Celtic Bhoys

Celtic’s board now have to decide what to do with the future of Doohan. The Bhoys could loan him out again, but the risk of him getting nothing out of it seems like a waste.

The next and likely best option would be to sell him permanently. The last thing a club would want to do is waste the potential of a player. Doohan, like many other players, want to fulfill their playing careers and dreams.

Blocking a player from achieving that potential seems morally wrong, something Brendan Rodgers said when asked about a move regarding Moussa Dembele.

Plus, his 10 total appearances with 30 goals conceded suggests he may not be at his best right now. Doohan’s value won’t be at the highest, but it might be what’s best for Celtic and for the young keeper.

With the Celts also looking for more at keeper with rumors suggesting Danny Ward as a potential signing, competition would be even more stiff for the 19-year-old.

Celtic have a lot of decisions to make with all of their players. However, the future with Doohan at Paradise seems uncertain right now. The Celts might have to make a hard choice with the future of Ross, but it will be something that’s likely the best for him as a player.
