Are Sevco really going to spend £4 million on 2 transfers?

Celtic have some tinkering to do and some big decisions ahead on players, no doubt about that. But, the Hoops are playing with big piles of cash and may end up taking in more money than they spend this offseason if all goes right.

The reality of Celtic’s situation is simple — it can afford to spend money and not strap itself financially. However, that’s not the case for its city rivals, but we’ll be damned if it appears they aren’t going to go out and spend like drunken sailors anyway.

According to the Scottish Daily Record, Sevco are set to fork over £4 million for a pair of Mexican players in this transfer window. Yes, we said £4 million SPEND.

That usually a crazy amount for Celtic to fork over, and this club who was recently on the brink of insolvency again is spending like mad to try and catch up with Celtic.

The report indicates the targets are Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera, from Chivas and Pumas respectively and the clubs will receive £1.2million for Herrera and £2.7million for Pena.

Nevermind the lessons of just six years ago or the past two decades really. Just throw it all out the window and keep spending money you don’t have. Even if Sevco are banking on Europa League monies, they can expect no more guaranteed than £2.3 million or so based off of what was dolled out last year.

All of this from a club that was well-rumored within its own fanbase to be on the brink of administration once again in February. Things were so bad that fans believed the club may not have been able to make payroll for the month of February and were facing a massive hole in the budget.

It’s part of how Pedro Caixinha was inserted after Mark Warburton got out of dodge as quickly as he could earlier this calendar year.

I get that chasing Celtic is important to them. There’s also little doubt that having a second solid club is going to be really helpful for the growth of Scottish football. But, is this really the wise way to get it done?

Last time I checked, spending money you don’t have to chase after an even smaller piece of the financial pie is just plain stupid. After all, winning the Scottish Premiership pays out a cool £3 million (which was less than Celtic made from one home game in the Champions League last year).

Tell me again how any of this makes financial sense at all? No seriously, I’ll sit back and wait for your explanation….oh, what’s that? There is none…that’s what I thought.

Perhaps we’re missing some pile of cash that is sitting in a smoke-filled room at Ibrox or wherever they have leased space out. But, unless that is the case it appears Sevco are willing to throw cash they don’t have after cash that is already spent just to appease fans.

Should the club spend £4 million like proposed enjoy being sent right back to where you started five seasons ago. This time you’ll deserve every bit of shame that comes along with it, because you as a club clearly have no clue.

It’s truly mind-boggling how desperate they are to chase us up the financial and on-field success ladder, especially considering they can’t even get on solid financial footing first.

Go ahead, take a financial leap in hopes of earning back all but £1 million of what you’ve spent in hopes of winning the league. Meanwhile, Celtic will likely cash in more than that in two games should they make to the group stages of the Champions League.

It’s a sad and yet hilarious tale of Sevco trying to be something they are not. But, by all means, drive your club off the cliff again and watch the SFA help you pick up the pieces again. You two deserve each other at this point.
