Why Celtic swoop for Newcastle United player could make sense

If the rumours are true, Celtic could be preparing another big swoop for a Premier League veteran to bolster their squad. The Chronicle reports that the Hoops are keeping an eye on Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka as a possible signing for next season. There are, of course, lots of questions over such a move, especially why the Scottish champions would need another goalie at this point.

Dubravka has played 16 matches for Newcastle United this season. That includes four games in the EFL Cup run. He kept clean sheets in both semi-final legs against Arsenal but was on the bench for the final at Wembley.

Dubravka was rewarded with a new contract in February. That may make a move in the summer questionable, but Eddie Howe looks keen to bring in another goalkeeper and it may be the veteran that slips further down the pecking order as a result.

In addition to his games at Newcastle United, Dubravka has continued to add to his total of caps for Slovakia this year, taking his total past 50. That's a huge amount of experience from a player still in great form and playing at the top level.

Celtic could swoop for Premier League cover for Schmeichel

Celtic of course have Kasper Schmeichel as their first-choice keeper. He has been signed up for a second season, with Viljami Sinisalo as his backup.

Sinisalo has stepped up convincingly of late while Schmeichel recovers from an injury. The signs are that the Danish goalkeeper may return before the season's end, but there was a point where his issue looked more serious.

That may have restricted his ability to play into next season. Even if that does not turn out to be the case, any injury of this magnitude to a player who is 38 years old, can impact their game negatively for the rest of their career.

Bringing in Dubravka to bolster the squad between the posts could be a good backup if any question marks about Schmeichel for next season persist. And one would imagine that it would take much of a transfer fee, either.
