It would be an understatement to say that Celtic and the Rangers have had contrasting seasons. The Hoops flew out of the gates and were pretty much certain to be league champions by the midway point of the campaign. In fact, complacency might be one of the reasons they were not as good in the second half of the season. On the other hand, the Ibrox side have struggled throughout, first under the management of Philippe Clement and then with Barry Ferguson as interim head coach.

Speaking of Ferguson, it was made official over the weekend that he would not be staying on as manager. Of course, the Rangers legend had made it very clear that he was interested in continuing on.

But with a change in ownership on the horizon and the Rangers' shaky results under the management of Ferguson, his staying on was always unlikely. So, the decision did not come as a surprise to any Celtic fan.

On the other hand, it looks like it ended up dividing a lot of the Rangers' support. And that was very evident on social media.

One Rangers fan wrote after it was announced that Ferguson would be leaving: "Aye, thanks for making us worse than we were under Clement."

Of course, not every Rangers fan agreed with that view, and one replied: "Speaking about a club legend like that."

Then there were those who commended Ferguson for stepping up when needed: "All the best stepped in when a lot wouldn't and have put their own reputation on the line with the current playing squad."

Of course, it is worth pointing out that Ferguson has not had a notable coaching career. Before this, he had stints at Clyde, Kelty Hearts and Alloa Athletic. He also had not had a club in over three years. So, taking up the Ibrox job did not involve much of a risk for him.

As the interim manager of the Rangers, he coached 15 games, winning only 6 of them. Of course, he did have some good results, including a win at Celtic Park, ending a near five-year wait. Other than that, he won a European knockout tie against a Jose Mourinho team, something not many managers can say.

Now, it remains to be seen who the Rangers' next manager is. Whoever it turns out to be, there is not much reason for Celtic to be concerned as long as they do their own job well.
