Celtic are said to be keen to push ahead with a deal for a current Scottish Premiership standout, but they will not pay the asking price.
It has already been a frustrating summer for Hoops fans, who were hoping their side would take a more proactive approach to this window. Instead, they are left waiting on the first deal, and it even took Celtic weeks to get deals agreed for Martin O'Neill's backroom staff, weeks after the veteran boss was appointed full-time.
Work is ongoing to land new signings, and according to a fresh report, the Hoops are pushing to land Hibernian star Miguel Chaiwa.
Celtic won't meet Chaiwa asking price
Celtic have been linked with Chaiwa for some time, with the energetic midfielder having attracted interest for his performances last season. Football Insider say the Bhoys are keen on a move for Chaiwa this summer, but they are only willing to pay £5million.
Hibs are said to want closer to £7million, which is what they sold Kieron Bowie for. But Celtic feel that is a little over the odds, despite likely having the ability to pay the fee, with Arne Engels expected to go for around £25million this summer.
Hibs will know that, and they could well hold out for their £7million. It certainly doesn't pay to be a club making a big sale, with other clubs usually exploiting it.
The report claims Celtic think Chaiwa is the 'right profile' to improve their midfield, which could do with more depth, especially with Callum McGregor ageing.
Gray on Chaiwa
Speaking last year, Hibs boss David Gray said of Chaiwa: "He's a young, exciting player. He's got a lot of brilliant attributes and a lot to learn still, as well. He's got so much energy. Positionally, we've got a lot to work on with him on but he's got a brilliant attitude to working towards it.
"He's aggressive, he's athletic – a proper modern-day midfielder. He's really competitive, he has good energy and he's technically good as well.
"I think he's got all the right tools to be a top midfielder. There's still a lot of improvement to come and from a coaching point of view, loads of things to work on with him. But I think he's going to be a good asset for the football club in the long term."
