Celtic should ignore a transfer warning that has reportedly been sent out by one of their Premiership rivals. The Bhoys are in need of new signings, yet to get off the mark with their summer recruitment.

Martin O'Neill wants significant recruitment at Parkhead after taking on the job full-time, but the club are yet to complete any deals, while teams around them are getting ahead in the summer window.

O'Neill has a number of areas he needs to address, and that doesn't account for the likely exits, with Arne Engels set to lead at least a couple of big-money departures. The midfield is an obvious concern, and one potential target will not come easy.

Chaiwa latest

Celtic have been linked with a move for Hibernian's talented young midfielder Miguel Chaiwa, whose energetic approach to holding down the midfield has seen him attract interest aplenty.

Chaiwa impressed against Celtic in a Hibs win at Parkhead, and it led BBC Sport's Hibs fan columnist Matty Fairnie to say: "A special mention must go to Miguel Chaiwa, who put in a performance in midfield that we've not seen in Glasgow since John McGinn left the club.

"The youngster was incredible, showing as much technique as he did tenacity to set the tone for Hibs in the middle of the park. Hibs will be hoping to keep him at the club for as long as possible on Sunday's showing."

Hibs stand firm - so should Celtic

According to The Scotsman, Hibs have told clubs who have enquired about Chaiwa this summer that they have no intention to sell their midfield star. They are said to see the sale of Kieron Bowie for £7million as a precedent.

Whether that means it will take £7million to agree a sale is another question, but the precedent is that Hibs are willing to hold out for big money if they are going to sell.

But Chaiwa is an impressive presence in the middle of the pitch, and at only 22 years of age, he is a talent worth snapping up, as was seen at Parkhead and other Premiership grounds last season.

Celtic need midfield depth, but rather than empty depth, it should be players like Chaiwa who have a huge upside and still have the physicality and energy to compete. The Bhoys have money to spend this season, and they will be better-served spending it on players with Premiership experience like Chaiwa than on rogue gambles involving players from obscure leagues.
