Celtic are set to reignite their interest in Hibernian midfielder Miguel Chaiwa ahead of the summer transfer window. The Hoops were keen to bring the player to the club in January, but they couldn't get a deal over the line. The failure has not affected their interest.
The 21-year-old has impressed in the Scottish Premiership this season and would be a brilliant addition to Celtic's midfield. It could be the solution to their struggles in the middle of the park, as he seems to be a player who fits the profile that the club are looking for.
Chaiwa was planned to be the replacement for Arne Engels if he had departed the club for Nottingham Forest. He seems likely to stay now, fingers crossed, and that midfield pairing would be incredibly effective.
Last year, Hibs only paid £600,000 to bring him to the club. That means the Hoops could do a deal on the cheap, likely for under £2 million. The Easter Road side may try to command a good fee for him though, simply because they would be selling to a top six rival.
Manager David Gray has addressed the interest and admitted that it is real.
Speaking on Wednesday, he said: "I’m not surprised there’s interest, and I’m not surprised there’s speculation.
"His energy and enthusiasm to get after the ball is excellent, but even when he’s on it, I think there’s still a lot to come from Miguel. He’s improving all the time.
"Getting up to speed quickly with the intensity and the physicality in the Scottish game, which suits him because he’s got the attributes – there’s still a lot more to come, he’s still a young boy. He’s still working hard on his game and improving.
"For the attributes, and main reasons why you want to try and bring someone like that to a football club, he’s got attributes that really can be showcased in Scottish football."
Change of midfielders inbound
There is definitely a change of personnel inbound for Celtic. Paulo Bernardo is all but out the door, with him failing to feature properly for some time, and Reo Hatate seems keen to move away from the club in the summer after four years in Glasgow.
Callum McGregor needs a challenger and someone who we can rotate in for the captain, with some fans believing he's starting to show his age.
Chaiwa seems like the best option, especially as he would complement the players we already have. Definitely keep an eye on this transfer story as it seems to be developing quickly.
