Celtic are always on the lookout for potential signings. In the winter transfer window, they did strengthen their ranks by bringing back Jota from Rennes. The Portuguese ace has done well since returning to Parkhead and looks set to be a big part of Brendan Rodgers' plans moving forward. But he is not the only winger that the Hoops tried to sign. It looks like a Danish international, currently playing in the Seria A and also wanted by Tottenham Hotspur, was also on their radar.
Of course, Tottenham Hotspur are currently managed by Ange Postecoglou. Celtic fans are very aware of his ability to pick out the right players. During his time at Parkhead, he signed the likes of Kyogo, Jota, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Carl Starfelt, Josip Juranovic and more in the same season.
As reported by Il Messaggero (via Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic already attempted to sign Gustav Isaksen in January. Postecoglou and Rodgers – along with Bologna, were pushing to sign the 23-year-old on a loan deal after his entourage had held a meeting with Lazio about his future.
The move did not end up happening. Isaksen stayed put at Lazio. And since then, he has found his form and it is believed that his transfer valuation has doubled as a result.
Celtic and Tottenham made moves to sign Serie A winger
Isaksen has certainly done well for Lazio since the winter window closed. He has scored goals against teams like Napoli and Atalanta recently.
That surely has boosted not just his transfer valuation but his confidence as well. It remains to be seen if Celtic try to sign him in the summer window or not. The answer is most likely the latter.
If they do still want him, they might have to shell out a transfer fee to bring him on a permanent basis because it is hard to imagine that Lazio would be willing to send out a regular starter on loan. Other than the Serie A club, Isaksen has been getting consistent playing time with the Denmark national team as well.
This is not the first time that Celtic have been linked with Isaksen. The Glasgow club are believed to have held an interest in the winger going back to his time at FC Midtjylland, but a move to Parkhead has never materialised and, at the moment, seems unlikely.
