Celtic star Auston Trusty has suffered a worrying injury during his World Cup campaign with USA. The host nation were already through before Thursday night, when they were beaten 3-2 by a Turkiye side that had to win to give itself any chance of getting through.
Still, USMNT took the lead, and it was Celtic man Trusty who scored the goal just three minutes in, kickin goff a dramatic scrap on a hugely entertaining night all-round in the World Cup.
Turkiye ended up winning the game in the eighth minute of stoppage time, but in the end, the result will mean nothing. Turkiye were not able to leapfrog Paraguay or Australia, who drew against each other, meaning Australio go through in second on four points and Paraguay will go through as third on the same total - which is bad news for Scotland. USA win the group, while Turkiye will be eliminated as fourth in one of the shocks of the tournament.
Turkiye, who have a hugely talented young team, were superb during the qualifiers, but they were not able to find the net consistently at this World Cup, despite creating an untold number of chances.
Trusty dealt injury blow
In disappointing news for USMNT and Celtic, Trusty was stretchered off with what appeared to be an ankle injury in the final minutes of the game.
James Ducker “Auston Trusty in visible pain down near left by-line. Now being taken off on a stretcher. Looks like an injury to his left ankle,” journalist James Ducker noted in a post on X.
Another reporter in Larry Henry Jr added even before the main injury: “A major worry with Auston Trusty down holding the back of his leg in the final minutes of this one,” Henry shared in a. “He’s had a good night on both ends of the field.”
The ankle injury will put Trusty's participation for the rest of the tournament in doubt, and if it's serious, it could also have implications for Celtic's pre-season and the start of the news season, which is only just over a month away.
But for now, you feel for Trusty and his World Cup hopes, given UMSNT are through the Round of 32 and likely to get a favourable draw, meaning they will likely reach the quarter-finals as a minimum. We can only hope the setback was not as bad as it appeared, and that Trusty can spend the next week strengthening his ankle ligaments.
