The 5 Celtic players still at the World Cup after Scotland risk elimination

There will still be Celtic interest at the World Cup even if Scotland is eliminated.

The World Cup started with eight Celtic players involved. This is down to five now, unless Scotland progress as one of the best third-placed teams. That would eliminate Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston from the World Cup. Another Celtic player, Yang Hyun-jun, faces a nervous wait to see if his team will be involved again at the World Cup. His South Korea side finished third in Group A behind Mexico and South Korea.

Scotland had a solid start to the World Cup, defeating Haiti 1-0 in their opening game. However, losses to Morocco and Brazil followed. Steve Clarke's side would have regretted not scoring more against Haiti, which would have improved their goal difference. This would have given them a better chance at qualifying for the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams.

Celtic players who are still at the World Cup.

Daizen Maeda -Japan

Daizen Maeda featured for Japan as they drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in their opening game. However, he was then left on the bench for their 4-0 victory over Tunisia. Japan is currently second in its group, but only on goals scored. The Netherlands is top of the group, but level on four points with Japan. Sweden, who are one point behind, are Japan's next opponents.

Benjamin Nygren - Sweden

We could see two Celtic players face off when Benjamin Nygren's Sweden takes on Maeda's Japan at midnight BST. Nygren has played in both of Sweden's games so far. They beat Tunisia 5-1, but lost to the Netherlands by the same scoreline.

Sebastian Tounekti - Tunisia

Tunisia are all but out of the competition as they are bottom of Group F with a goal difference of minus eight. It would take a miracle for them to finish third behind Sweden. Sebastian Tounekti will have one more game against the Netherlands, but then we will inevitably lose another Celtic player from the tournament.

Alistair Johnston - Canada

Canada has progressed to the round of 32, but finished second in their group. Their opponents have already been decided, as they will face South Africa at the Los Angeles Stadium. Alistair Johnston's side would have been disappointed that they did not top their group, as this would have meant their next round match in Canada.

Auston Trusty - USMNT

The USMNT is also through to the knockout stages after topping their group. Trusty has only made a 10-minute cameo appearance so far against Australia. However, he could start in their final group match against Turkiye. His side has already topped their group and will likely face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the next round.
