Celtic sees Colby Donovan as a long-term option — but a loan would benefit both sides

Sending Colby Donovan out on loan would be a brilliant move for both sides.

Colby Donovan is a promising Celtic player. The 19-year-old has made 26 appearances for the Hoops this campaign, and with four assists from full-back, he's been a good option when called upon.

This is his first campaign at senior level, and he is highly rated at the club. However, despite him impressing when he has played, the Hoops hierarchy are allegedly keen on sending the young player out on loan next season.

With that being said, everyone is clear on one fact - he will be at Celtic Park long term. He is looked at as someone who will be a reliable option down the line. There is the suggestion that regular football could help his development a lot.

This would be even more likely if the Celts were to secure a permanent deal for Julian Araujo. The Mexican has been in fine form since joining up with Martin O'Neill's squad this campaign, and supporters are hoping that a move will be struck to keep him at the club for next season.

Of course, Alistair Johnston is also close to his return and will offer competition for right-back. The Canadian offered an exciting update to Hoops fans today that he could be back on the pitch for the split.

There is also a third option with Anthony Ralston offering cover. The experienced defender will likely remain at the club as back-up for next season, with his contract extending until 2027.

That leaves little room for Donovan, because although he has talent, the option of regular game-time isn't really there at Celtic. A move could really benefit the Hoops in the long-term.

Donovan deserves the chance to impress

Donovan deserves the chance to impress, whether that's at Celtic or out on loan. If we have options ahead of him, there is no reason why he shouldn't be shipped out. We still have him contracted, so let him play some football and hopefully show off what he has to offer.

Supporters are impressed with some of the things they have seen this campaign, even if they don't believe he's ready for the pressures of Celtic just yet. He is ready for senior football; there is no doubt about that. Now, he needs to get the chance, even if that isn't in the hoops right away.

We'll have him until the end of the season, and hopefully, he can still impress from now until the end of the campaign. He is out injured after picking up a knock against Dundee United that caused him to pull out of international duty, so he may fall down the pecking order again, but he'll be here, and that's the most important part.
