Colby Donovan has pulled out of the Scotland under-21s squad due to a knee injury he sustained in Celtic's 2-0 loss to Dundee United.
The right-back was playing in the absence of the injured Julian Araujo, who has returned to his parent club, Bournemouth, for treatment, but picked up the knock while trying to cross the ball. He was treated on the pitch but had to be taken off, replaced by Luke McCowan, and now, he has pulled out of Scotland youth games.
The under-21s have scheduled fixtures against the Czech Republic and Portugal in the coming week, and the defender was expected to play a part. Due to him having to pull out, you'll hope that he can recover instead over the international break, but Hoops fans will now be worried that he won't be ready in time for the trip to Dundee on April 5.
Araujo is expected to remain out when domestic football returns, and although Alistair Johnston is training, he isn't ready to make the matchday squad just yet. If Donovan is out, that would mean heavy positional rotation would be needed, and considering Hoops fans were shocked when Reo Hatate was playing a makeshift right-back at Tannadice, supporters have every right to be nervous.
Over the next week and a half, we'll keep an eye on official channels, and hopefully, we will get an injury update on Donovan sooner rather than later.
What happens if he isn't ready?
If Donovan really can't play the game, and if Johnston and Araujo are still out, that would leave one player to slot in - Anthony Ralston.
Ralston came on for 12 minutes in the 3-1 win over Motherwell, and he did the job. While he may not offer anything spectacular, he is a reliable player, and if we need to look to him, he should hopefully see us over until our preferred options are back in action.
His last start for the club came in the 3-1 loss to Rangers back in January, with him playing 88 minutes of that game. He won 7 out of 10 of his ground duels, winning one out of two of his aerial ones, and made 10 defensive contributions in the game.
The next time Martin O'Neill holds a press conference, we can look forward to additional updates on Johnston, Donovan and of course, Araujo. Fans will be patiently waiting to hear what the manager has to say.
