Finally, there is a rush of activity evident on the Celtic transfer front. Rumours of bids, moves, and contracts are bouncing around again, adding a touch of hope for Parkhead fans. Even the much-ignored centre-forward position is getting a boost, with some news this morning suggesting a longer-term plan is emerging.
Whereas the recent options for Martin O'Neill up front have been limited, even more so with an injury to Johnny Kenny, things are looking up. It looks likely that Junior Adamu has almost sealed a loan move from Freiburg to the Hoops. He’ll join new signing Tomas Cvancara and the returning Kelechi Iheanacho to compete for the centre forward role.
Adamu’s move has been said to be a done deal, and all agreed, with a medical behind him. Sky Sports, though, has suggested there may still be a hold-up with the loan contract from Freiburg. But fans can relax and breathe easily; there doesn't seem to be anything serious to worry about.
Celtic striker hold up could signal long term plan
In fact, the hold-up could be great news. The suggestion is that with the loan deal agreed, discussions are underway about inserting an option to buy for the Celts. Now that's some great planning if it comes off. It might give a summer window a boost and rescue some of the despair from fans we've seen over recent transfer dealings.
Of course, much depends on what form Adamu shows as and when he gets time on the pitch. It can be tough for a loan player to settle in and adapt. Adamu’s statistics at Freiburg aren't too encouraging. Only two goals from 18 appearances this season, and just seven overall in his 67 games for the Bundesliga side. He did have a better spell with RB Salzburg before that, with 23 goals and 11 assists from his 84 appearances.
Cvancara didn't have impressive statistics recently either. He is off to a flying start so far, meaning hopes will likely be high for Asamu too. If the Austrian can fit in quickly, creating and taking chances, then he could be a great fit for O’Neill’s side.
Securing that option to buy would then allow whoever takes over as manager to benefit too. The centre forward position may be looking stronger very soon, but with all the loans, there is a danger of just postponing issues until the summer. Fingers crossed on that option to buy and Adamu proving himself to make it worthwhile.
