Celtic have no choice but to make a transfer at centre-forward to save their season

Celtic need to score more goals if they are to keep within touching distance of Hearts.

Celtic are currently seven points behind the Scottish Premiership leaders Heart of Midlothian. However, the Hoops do have a game in hand on the team from Edinburgh.

Remarkably, Celtic have conceded fewer goals than Hearts, with just eight compared to 10 respectively. The problem for the Hoops, though, is putting the ball in the opposite net. They have scored just 20, whilst Hearts have found the back of the net 29 times.

Johnny Kenny is currently Celtic's best option at centre-forward. The Republic of Ireland international has scored four goals in just seven Scottish Premiership games this season. He has finally got a chance for the Hoops following loan spells at Queen's Park and Shamrock Rovers.

Kelechi Iheanacho had a good start to the season for Celtic, scoring twice in four league games. However, he is now out with a hamstring injury.

A key reason why Iheanacho joined Celtic would have been to play under Brendan Rodgers again. Rodgers was his manager at Leicester City, but his former boss has since resigned.

Who could solve Celtic's striker crisis?

Another player who is currently out of action through injury is Callum Osmand. However, he is just 20 years old and represented the Hoops just three times. He is already a hero at Celtic Park for scoring the goal to seal a 3-1 victory over Rangers in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals.

Shin Yamada is Celtic's other option at centre-forward. However, he is yet to have a goal involvement in any of his four games for the club so far. The Japanese international arrived at Celtic this year from Kawasaki Frontale in the J1 League.

A new striker is very much needed for Celtic. However, their transfer strategy will be difficult as they do not have a permanent manager. Martin O'Neill is in charge, but only on an interim basis.

Evan Ferguson could solve Celtic's striking crisis. He is currently on loan at AS Roma from Brighton, but has yet to score in Serie A. There were rumours that the Italian side could cut his loan deal short. If this is the case, then the Republic of Ireland forward could be a good option for the Hoops.

Ferguson is only 21 and was very highly rated as a young player with the Seagulls. However, he has struggled for game time at the club, but has failed to make his mark whilst on loan at West Ham United as well. The Scottish Premiership is not as demanding as the Premier League or Serie A, so Ferguson could find his level in the division.
