When Brendan Rodgers walked out of Celtic during his first run as their manager, in order to join Leicester City, it was one of the most unpopular decisions in the club's history. So much so that it was a surprise when he was brought back less than five years later. This time around, if the Northern Irishman did something similar, it would be almost understandable.
That is because the fans have witnessed arguably the worst transfer window in Celtic history. One in which the club allowed key players like Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah to leave for significant fees without bringing in proper replacements.
Of course, there have been numerous occasions in the past when Celtic fans have been unhappy with how transfer business has been conducted. But never to this level. An official statement from the club in response to their queries have not smoothed things either.
Unsurprisingly, Rodgers is being linked with a move away amid all these problems. And it looks like a Premier League club have him in their sights.
Premier League club lining up Brendan Rodgers move amid Celtic problems
As reported by Football Insider, Rodgers is high on Nottingham Forest’s shortlist as there is a possibility that Nuno Espirito Santo could soon be dismissed. The two-time European champions are believed to be sounding out potential replacements, with the Celtic manager a firm option for them.
On the other hand, there is uncertainty around the future of Rodgers at Celtic. Pete O'Rourke said:
"Rodgers isn’t going to sit around and wait for things to get better.
“If he doesn’t feel he has the backing of the board to take Celtic to the next level, he could look to move on to a club who are prepared to back him.
“I’m sure there would be no shortage of takers if he did become available, in the Premier League and probably elsewhere as well."
All we can do is wait and watch how things turn out from here. On numerous occasions since returning to Parkhead, Rodgers has mentioned how he was at the very least going to see out his contract. One can only hope that he sticks to that. That being said, nobody could have foreseen the summer transfer window that Celtic were going to have and that would be enough to change a lot of managers' minds.
