Why Celtic’s next signing feels like déjà vu (in a good way)

It's the start of yet another new era at Celtic this season. On Monday, following the catastrophic 3-1 defeat to Rangers at Parkhead, Wilfried Nancy was sacked. Having lost six of his eight matches in charge, at just 33 days, the Frenchman becomes, by some distance, the shortest-serving manager in the club's history, shattering John Barnes' record.

So, for the second time this season, Martin O'Neill will be in interim charge. This time, the soon-to-be 74 -year-old knows he will remain in the role until the end of the season. The Northern Irishman won seven of eight matches during his recent temporary stint, including beating Feyenoord at De Kuip and defeating Rangers at Hampden.

O'Neill is parachuted back in at a crucial time, with the Hoops hosting Dundee United on Saturday, with games against Bologna, Premiership leaders Hearts at Tynecastle and then Utrecht to come later this month.

What goes on in the January transfer window meanwhile will also play a major role in determining who wins the title come May. Julián Araujo has already arrived on loan from Bournemouth, but the Celts are also reportedly "one step away" from another addition, so here's why it is déjà vu in a good way.

Celtic close in on another new signing

As reported by Croatian journalist Ižak Ante Sučić, Celtic are "one step away" from signing Niko Sigur. They add that Wolves were also in the running, but Celtic have "won the race for his signature". So, who is Sigur, and should supporters be excited?

Born in British Columbia, Sigur has spent his entire senior career in Croatia at HNK Hajduk Split. He has made 101 senior appearances for the club, scoring five goals, including featuring in 22 of their 24 matches so far this campaign.

The 22-year-old is also a Canadian international, representing les Rouges on 15 occasions. He started all six of their autumn friendlies at right-back, doing so in the absence of a certain Alistair Johnston. Sigur, though, is known for his versatility, equally adept at right-back and defensive midfield, deployed in both roles by Jesse Marsch during last summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Well, right-back has certainly been a problem position throughout this season for Celtic. Johnston suffered a torn hamstring against Kairat in August, only to be rushed back by Brendan Rodgers for October's clash with Sturm Graz, re-aggravating the issue less than half an hour into the game.

Johnston has undeniably been one of Celtic's best signings in recent times, arriving shortly after the World Cup from CF Montréal, a consistent performer before this injury-ravaged campaign. Thus, there is optimism that his understudy at the international level could have a similar impact. Sigur could also add some much-needed solidity to the Hoops' midfield, potentially set to partner captain Callum McGregor against tougher opponents.

For now, though, with Johnston still sidelined, Sigur appears poised to go straight in at right-back. Perennial back-up Anthony Ralston and teenager Colby Donovan have been timesharing that role throughout the campaign to date, hence why Araujo and now Sigur are seemingly set to arrive, with reinforcements badly needed.

The Canadian appears unlikely to join in time for the weekend, so could debut at Falkirk in mid-week, or perhaps against sixth-tier Auchinleck Talbot in the Scottish Cup the following Sunday.
