Wilfried Nancy's start to life at Celtic has been a horror show. He has lost all three of his games in charge so far with the latest being the Scottish League Cup final against St Mirren. Many fans wanted to see him get sacked following that result, but there was little chance of that happening so soon after his arrival. It is hard to imagine that things will get much better from here though. Once you have lost the supporters in Glasgow, it is as good as over.
The Celtic board might only be postponing the inevitable here. Then again, they were always expected to give Nancy every chance possible to succeed.
After all, the club shelled out a compensation fee to bring him in and also parted with Martin O'Neill in the middle of a great run as interim manager, right before the League Cup final. They have put all their eggs in the Nancy basket.
Unfortunately, there might be a hole at the bottom of the said basket. Judging from some of Nancy's comments, it seems like he might not be grasping the true importance of winning at Celtic, talking about performances even after the cup final defeat. No fan wants to hear that after such a result.
Unfortunately for Celtic fans, Wilfried Nancy is proving Alistair Johnston right
As reported by the Daily Record earlier this month, Alistair Johnston had said regarding Nancy:
"The biggest thing for him is that it is different in the MLS - you don't get nearly as much time over here. At big clubs like Celtic, he knows very well that yes, you want to implement your ideas, but you need to win as well."
Unfortunately for Nancy, he has not won anything so far. And he might be starting to realise the importance of it.
Or perhaps he is not even taking in the outside noise. If so, that might be another mistake he is making. The Celtic job is like no other. You must connect with the fans. Just look at how well that worked for Ange Postecoglou, someone Nancy had been compared to at one point.
