Who will be the next Rangers manager? That is a situation that even Celtic fans are keeping an eye on. Brendan Rodgers has seen his fair share of managers come and go through the Ibrox revolving door over his two stints in Glasgow. Who will be the next one to arrive and try to challenge the Northern Irishman?
Quite a few names are doing the rounds. Steven Gerrard has unsurprisingly been linked with the Ibrox job. Davide Ancelotti seems to be quickly emerging as one of the frontrunners as well.
Another name that is believed to be on the Rangers' shortlist is Russell Martin. He had a loan stint at Ibrox during his playing days and has a solid reputation down south in management. He started his managerial career at MK Dons, then spent two years with Swansea City before earning Southampton promotion to the Premier League. He was sacked last December after a bad run in the English top flight.
If Chris Sutton is to be believed, then it looks like Martin might be headed elsewhere though. As reported by the Daily Record, the former Celtic striker said on BBC Radio 5 Live:
"My sources are telling me that Ruud van Nistelrooy will be leaving Leicester. A possibility of Russell Martin going in there – that’s my sources."
Celtic hero Chris Sutton drops news Rangers won't like
So, it looks like Martin might end up in the hot seat at Leicester City. The Foxes were relegated from the Premier League this season. They will be looking to go straight back up next season. And considering the fact that the Rangers have sacked managers in three straight seasons, it might be a less risky job than the one at Ibrox.
Of course, this is not good news for the Rangers. They will surely want to have as many options as possible, even if Martin might not be the favourite to get the job this summer.
It remains to be seen how this entire saga plays out over the coming weeks and months. While Celtic will be keeping an eye on the situation, it is not something that they need to be worried about though.
Celtic will be the favourites next season again, no matter who ends up being the next Rangers manager. Whether that turns out to be Gerrard, Ancelotti, Martin or someone else. That's just the reality of the situation.
