It feels like quite some time back now but not too long ago, Vaclav Cerny was making the headlines for his celebrations at Parkhead. Following the Rangers' late winner to make it 3-2, the winger celebrated by appearing to splash water onto the Celtic supporters in the stands from his bottle. It goes without saying that this angered the fans and such behaviour is not acceptable, no matter which team you support.
In the aftermath of the incident, there were suggestions that Cerny could be handed a ban. It could even be as many as 8 games.
Now, we know the result of the investigation that took place. And it is not one that will make Celtic fans happy or meet their expectations.
As reported by the Daily Record, the extent of Cerny's punishment is a formal warning as to his future conduct. It means he won't face any ban and will be clear to feature for the Rangers moving forward.
Celtic fans' immediate reaction as SFA make Vaclav Cerny announcement
Now, to be fair, Celtic fans did not sound particularly disheartened or unhappy with the decision regarding Cerny. One wrote: "Heat of the moment, and if you take that away, the game is gone."
But then, there were those who were concerned about the precedent that this was setting. One said: "It’s a clear red card. Does this mean all players can skoosh water at fans now with no consequences?"
At the end of the day, the decision is not going to have any effect on the title race. The Hoops might not be in good form at the moment but the Rangers have not been any better. As a result, one would expect Brendan Rodgers' side to get over the finish line soon.
As for Cerny, it will be interesting to see if he remains at Ibrox beyond this season. He is currently on loan with the Rangers. And if his stint is extended, whether temporarily or on a permanent basis, then he can expect quite the welcome when he visits Celtic Park the next time around. That is for sure.
