Celtic could get a second chance to sign one of their transfer targets from last summer. The Bhoys are still without a new signing this summer despite starting pre-season training on Friday.
There are no new faces in the building, and there is no clarity over the futures of Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, either, with both players hoping to land contract extensions after short-term deals.
In the case of Iheanacho, the decision is a little perplexing given his impact towards the end of last summer and the sheer lack of strikers at Parkhead.
Celtic in desperate need of strikers
Celtic have a lack of strikers as things stand, set to only have Callum Osmand as an out-and-out striker on the books if Iheanacho is not kept. That's a concerning scenario that the Bhoys patched up with two loan deals last season.
Daizen Maeda can play there, of course, but there are big doubts over whether the Japan international will stay for next season, now in the last year of his contract.
At the minimum, Celtic need to sign two new strikers, and they may well need three depending on what happens with Iheanacho and Maeda this summer.
Dolberg could be an option again
One player who could return to Celtic's shortlist is Danish frontman Kasper Dolberg, who was targeted by Brendan Rodgers last summer. Changes in manager could see Celtic look elsewhere, of course, but it's not impossible the club have kept him in mind.
Dolberg ended up signing for Ajax, but despite him scoring 10 goals last season, Ajax are said to be hoping to find a buyer for the forward this summer. That's according to VI, via the Celtic Way.
Ajax signed Dolberg for €10million plus another €2million in performance-related add-ons that likely haven't been met. It remains to be seen how much Ajax will ask to sell the Dane this summer, but it's likely they will have to take a hit of at least a couple of million. One would imagine he will be available for €7million to €8million, but that is purely speculation.
At 28 years of age, Dolberg still has plenty to offer, and he is a player who can be a real handful for defenders. It will be interesting to see if Celtic circle back, but we haven't seen them linked with many forwards despite their clear deficiencies there at that area of the pitch.
