Celtic ended up putting all their eggs in one basket on deadline day as they continued trying to sign Kasper Dolberg from Anderlecht. The Hoops were believed to have made multiple offers for the striker but ultimately, a move did not materialise and he ended up making a return to Ajax instead after his former club had made a late swoop.
The failure to sign Dolberg while sanctioning the departure of Adam Idah on deadline day is one of the biggest reasons behind the fan dissatisfaction that we have seen since the end of the summer transfer window. And it remains to be seen if changes take place as a result of it.
If they do, it will go down as one of the most important transfer sagas in Celtic history. But as it turns out, the Hoops might not have even had a chance when Ajax came calling for Dolberg's services.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Dolberg was asked about interest from other clubs in the window, which included Greece, the United States, Saudi Arabia and Celtic. Reports in the Netherlands claimed that he had turned down more lucrative offers. He said to De Telegraaf:
"That was a very easy decision, because I wanted to go to Ajax, and nothing else mattered.
"In the Danish training camp, I had to stay focused, do my thing, and hope the clubs would reach an agreement. Unfortunately, I had no influence on that."
Kasper Dolberg shares real reason he rejected Celtic move
Well, sometimes, players just have their heart set on a move. In the case of Dolberg, it looks like a return to Ajax was at the top of his wishlist and he got it. We can only wish him the best of luck.
Celtic did not manage to sign a striker on deadline day. They did eventually manage to agree a deal to bring in Kelechi Iheanacho as a free agent.
The Nigerian striker has struggled with form in recent years. But he did play his best football under the management of Brendan Rodgers during their time together at Leicester City. The fans are hoping that the Northern Irishman can repeat the trick and help him rediscover his best at Parkhead.
If he is not, Celtic could be in trouble. They do not have an out-and-out goalscorer right now. Daizen Maeda has struggled in front of goal and admitted he was keen on leaving this summer. Shin Yamada and Johnny Kenny are not ready to lead the line.
