Celtic are said to have an alternative plan to land an attacking target this summer. The Bhoys are still working to land their first signing of the summer, with Martin O'Neill keen to land a significant number of additions this summer.

The Bhoys have plenty of gaps in their squad, with no starting goalkeeper, one striker on their books, and there are gaps elsewhere.

O'Neill clearly wants a winger this summer, and we have seen a couple of players linked, including Cole Campbell and Elijah Just.

Campbell chase takes fresh twist

Borussia Dortmund winger Campbell has been heavily linked this summer. The youngster is coming off the back of a disappointing loan spell with Hoffenheim, and it seems Dortmund are willing to sell the American, but not for less than £60million.

According to Football Insider, Celtic are not willing to pay £6million, but they will switch to a loan approach in a bid to get the deal over the line, It's not clear whether there will be an option to buy included, which Dortmund may be keen on.

Dortmund are also said to be open to a loan deal, so there is a fair chance Celtic will manage progress in their talks. Campbell is under contract with the German club until 2028, but Dortmund seem to have decided he is not of their standard.

New Bundesliga club Elversberg have also been linked with Campbell, which could be a complicating factor, and the other factor is Celtic's supposed interest in Morthwell's Just. Although if the Campbell deal is a loan, it would save the Bhoys a chunk of cash, which may be handy given how many needs they have in their squad this summer.

Campbell would be a gamble

Campbell looks to be an interesting talent, but he would unquestionably be a gamble for the Hoops. The youngster is coming off a disappointing season that saw him struggle for starts at Hoffenheim.

He is obviously unproven at Scottish Premiership level, although he, of course, has the ability to be a fringe Bundesliga player, so the quality shouldn't be a concern, even if the physicality could be.

The winger has played once in the Champions League, but he is inexperienced in that competition, and in senior football in general.

From that perspective, Campbell could work out as a loan signing, but Celtic fans are likely to be left concerned if that loan replaces a permanent winger signing. With such a young player, Celtic should also be looking to sign a starting winger if they plan on going for Campbell.
