Coming out of the summer transfer window, most fans felt that there was no way Brendan Rodgers would sign a contract extension with Celtic. How could he, after the lack of ambition and efficiency we had seen from the club? In fact, a large section feared that he would walk away in the middle of the season amid links with Nottingham Forest.

That Nottingham Forest job has now gone to Ange Postecoglou. On the other hand, Rodgers has suggested that he is still not ruling out the possibility of signing a contract extension.

But in order to make that happen, certain conditions would have to be met. And it has been suggested that one of them might be the departure of the person who briefed against him to the media.

As reported by CeltsAreHere, while speaking on the Press Box Podcast, Stephen McGowan said:

"I know that Brendan Rodgers said he wouldn’t close the door on signing a new deal, but they haven’t offered him a new contract. I think the only way he would sign that new contract is if certain conditions were met. I don’t think you need to be Hercule Poirot to know which one of those conditions would be.

“It would have to be the departure of the individual who he clearly suspects of briefing against him in a national newspaper. So interesting times. I think probably we’ve passed the danger point, but Rodgers has played a strong hand here and I think he’s in quite a strong position."

Brendan Rodgers tipped to demand Celtic man's resignation

Of course, this is in reference to the recent reports in the media about the Northern Irishman's future at Celtic. As reported by The Scottish Sun, one source told them that senior figures inside the club believe Rodgers is engineering his exit.

We do not need to tell you why Rodgers might not be happy with such comments being made to the media. Now, it remains to be seen whether it leads to any change or not.

Also, the question that needs to be asked is whether Celtic even want to continue with Rodgers as their manager beyond this season. Of course, he is a big name and has enjoyed a lot of success at Parkhead. There is no doubt about.

But truth be told, his second spell has not been the grand success that the first one was. The Champions League campaign last season was a highlight for sure but for the most part, things have been shaky at best. They have been helped by the fact that the Rangers have not been able to compete at all.

All things considered, though, there has not been much to write home about in terms of results. And the 'boring' brand of football has not helped matters.

One could argue that parting ways at the end of the season would be the best thing for both Celtic and Rodgers. It does feel like the club and the manager need a fresh start.
