Heading into the summer transfer window, most Celtic fans would have expected the club to bring in several players on loan considering the magnitude of the squad rebuild on hand. But the Hoops have not done that. In fact, they have made their first loan signing of the summer on transfer deadline day.

Jota has arrived at Parkhead on a season-long loan from Benfica. The Portuguese winger had spent the previous season on loan at Real Valladolid.

Interestingly, Celtic have an option to buy included in the loan deal. As reported by Sky Sports, the club have the option to make the deal permanent for a transfer fee believed to be just over £6 million.

That kind of an option to buy just shows how highly Jota is rated even though he has not quite been able to find his feet in senior football yet.

Jota could be a brilliant signing for Celtic

It is safe to say that Jota was absolutely fantastic for Portugal at multiple youth levels as well as Benfica. But he has not been able to deliver the same performances in senior football till now.

There is no question about the 22-year-old winger’s talent or ability. He is absolutely brilliant on the ball and possesses the ability to get past his man with ease due to his combination of dribbling ability and pace. And he was a regular goalscorer at youth level as well, which shows that he has an eye for goal. In fact, Real Madrid are believed to have tried to sign him a couple of seasons back.

When it comes to Celtic, this is a move that has very little risk involved but has the promise of a massive reward. If Ange Postecoglou is able to get the best out of Jota, then the club might have a fantastic player on their hands, who they can then sign due to the option to buy included in the loan deal. If not, then the Portuguese winger will return to Benfica next summer.
