Celtic have been handed Georgios Giakoumakis transfer blow
Kyogo Furuhashi has been brilliant ever since arriving at Parkhead. He scored as well as assisted in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League play-off round tie against AZ Alkmaar to help Celtic to a 2-0 win.
But other than the Japanese star, none of the other strikers at the club have looked in good form recently. As a result, it should not be a surprise if the Hoops decided to go after another centre-forward before the transfer window closes, especially with Odsonne Edouard being linked with a Parkhead exit.
Georgios Giakoumakis has been linked with Celtic over the past few days and he could certainly be a good signing for Ange Postecoglou’s side. But it looks like the Hoops have been handed a blow in the transfer race for the Greek international.
As tweeted out by journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos, Giakoumakis was in Bremen yesterday and had negotiations with Werder Bremen, who have an advantage:

Celtic are still in for Giakoumakis but Werder Bremen have an advantage
It is not hard to see why clubs would be interested in Giakoumakis. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 29 goals and provided 2 assists in 33 appearances across all competitions for VVV-Venlo last season. 26 of those goals came in the Dutch league as he topped the Eredivisie scoring charts and by some distance.
But VVV-Venlo were relegated from the Eredivisie and as a result, Giakoumakis is expected to leave the club this summer.
It is safe to say that the prospect of Celtic signing the Eredivisie’s top scorer from last season is exciting but his goal scoring record before the 2020/21 campaign could be a reason for worry. Ultimately though, Giakoumakis has proven that in the right system, he can find the back of the net consistently and at 26 years of age, is entering his prime as a footballer.
Thus, he could prove to be a solid signing for Postecoglou’s side if the Hoops can get a deal over the line. At this point of time, it looks like Werder Bremen have an advantage though.
