There has been a lot of excitement at Celtic with Kyogo Furuhashi making a brilliant start to his career at Parkhead with his energy, ability and goals. Could he be paired with another striker up top in the near future?

The club’s other strikers have been going through a quiet spell. Odsonne Edouard has scored a couple lately but he does not look at the top of his game right now and could possibly depart Parkhead before the transfer window closes. On the other hand, neither Albian Ajeti nor Leigh Griffiths look close to the first-team picture at this point.

As a result, it would not be surprising if the club ends up making a move for another striker this summer. And it looks like they have a Greek international on their radar.

As reported by the Daily Record, Celtic have opened negotiations over the transfer of Georgios Giakoumakis, who was the Dutch Eredivisie’s top scorer last season. Ange Postecoglou is believed to have played a central role in the pursuit of the Greek international. A £2.5 million transfer fee could be enough to secure his signature from VVV-Venlo, who were relegated from Netherlands’ top division last season.

Giakoumakis could be a solid signing for Celtic

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Giakoumakis scored 29 goals and provided 2 assists in 33 appearances across all competitions for VVV-Venlo last season, with 26 of those goals coming in the Eredivisie.

It does look like VVV-Venlo are open to the prospect of letting the Greek striker leave this summer and it goes without saying that he could be a solid signing for the Hoops. One big worry though could be his goalscoring record before the 2020/21 season, which was not very impressive.

Thus, there will be an element of risk associated with any move for Giakoumakis. But he did top the scoring charts in the Eredivisie last season and at 26 years of age, is entering his prime as a footballer. As a result, a move for him does make a lot of sense.
