Celtic have been linked with a move for Liam Scales recently that could break the transfer record for a League of Ireland player. But it is yet to take place with several other clubs believed to be interested in signing the Shamrock Rovers star as well.

The 23-year-old has been very impressive in recent times and appears to have caught the eye of a number of clubs. He is a solid centre-back, who has the versatility to play as a left-wing back as well.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 47 appearances for Shamrock Rovers till now, scoring 4 goals and providing 5 assists in the process of doing so.

The Hoops were believed to be close to signing Scales but the move has not happened yet and it remains to be seen what the future holds for the youngster. It does look like he is likely to depart Shamrock Rovers in the near future though. As reported by the Irish Mirror, when asked if he expected to leave the club by August 31, he said:

"“I’m not sure but I’d say so. Anything can happen.“There’s interest and that’s public. I’m weighing up my options and taking my time. Until I make that decision I’m a Rovers player.”"

Scales could be a solid signing for Celtic

While the transfer rumours linking Scales with a move to Celtic might have come a bit out of the blue, it does look like he could be a solid addition to Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

Firstly, his versatility is a massive positive as The Hoops need to strengthen both at centre-back and at left-back at this point of time. And Scales seems to be capable of playing in both those positions.

Secondly, many people believe that Scales is ready to make a big move. Clubs from the Premier League and the Championship have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old as well. And it is not hard to see why, considering his performances for Shamrock Rovers. It will be interesting to see if Celtic are able to win the transfer race.
