Celtic have been linked with a move for James McCarthy for years now and it is not hard to see why. The midfielder has enjoyed a solid career in English football representing the likes of Wigan Athletic, Everton and Crystal Palace during his time there.

Finally, the Hoops managed to sign him this summer and that too as a free agent. At 30 years of age, McCarthy should have plenty left in the tank as well if he can remain fit.

Injuries have been a worry for the Republic of Ireland international in recent years though. He suffered a leg break during his time at Everton. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he also featured for a combined 2739 minutes of football during his two seasons at Crystal Palace.

But while speaking about his injuries on Celtic’s official YouTube channel and as reported by 67 Hail Hail, McCarthy said:

"“I think the last couple of seasons, the injuries haven’t been as bad. It’s more when I broke my leg.“The season before last I was involved in 33 or 34 games. Last season I had a couple of small niggles but it wasn’t anything serious. Mentally and physically I feel good.”"

McCarthy can be a great signing for Celtic if he can remain fit

A fit McCarthy would certainly be an exciting addition to this squad. He is a Premier League proven player and has plenty of international experience as well.

If he can remain fit, then he could be a regular feature in this team and will most probably be one of the best midfielders playing in Scotland if he can rediscover his form.

Hopefully, that will come with time on the pitch. For now, he is yet to make his debut for the club. And it will be interesting to see how he performs moving forward.

He is not new to Scottish football though and should not take a lot of time to adjust to his new surroundings. It was at Hamilton Academical that he started his senior career before moving down South.

Central midfield is definitely an area that the Hoops needed to make an addition in following the departure of Scott Brown this summer and McCarthy is certainly a solid one to say the least.
