After being linked with James McCarthy for years, Celtic have finally managed to sign the midfielder, that too on a free transfer.

Now, McCarthy has had his injury problems in recent years and it will be vital that he remains fit moving forward. But if he can do so, the midfielder could prove to be a massive signing for the Hoops and become an important feature in the first-team.

Naturally, the fans must be keen to see him make his debut for the club but they might have to wait a bit longer. Although Joe Hart is going to be available for the Europa League third qualifying round first leg against FK Jablonec, McCarthy won’t be. He could be in the running to play this weekend though.

As reported by Sky Sports, while speaking on the situation, Ange Postecoglou said:

"“The difference with James was he wasn’t training at a club. He’s been training on his own whereas Joe was training with Tottenham.“So we made a decision to leave (McCarthy) back in Glasgow. He’ll have a session today and tomorrow with our staff there and we’ll have a look at him on Saturday.“He’s been working hard on his own and is keen to get started.”"

McCarthy could be a great signing for Celtic

On top of his game, McCarthy is a brilliant player. But he has had his fair share of injury issues in recent seasons. According to stats from Transfermarkt, in his two seasons at Crystal Palace, McCarthy played a total 2739 minutes of football.

At 30 years of age though, he should have plenty left in the tank if he can remain fit. And if he can do that, it would be a massive boost to Celtic.

To be honest, the signings of both Hart and McCarthy come with an element of risk but the reward is huge as well. Both of them are Premier League proven players and can add a lot to this squad, both on and off the pitch.

From their start to the season, it was clear that Postecoglou’s side needed some additions. And they have done just that by bringing in the experienced duo. They also play in positions that the Hoops needed reinforcements in. Now, one can only hope that they rediscover their best at Parkhead.
