It is clear that Celtic have made a disappointing start to their 2021/22 campaign. The club are already out of the UEFA Champions League qualification phase and lost their opening game of the Premiership campaign at the hands of Hearts.

Thus, the Hoops need to make additions to the squad in a number of positions. And they have just made two in the form of Joe Hart and James McCarthy.

Both could prove to be very important signings for the Hoops. On one hand, goalkeeper has been an area of worry for the Hoops for a while now. Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard have all got runs with the first-team gloves in recent times but none of them have managed to make the position their own.

On the other hand, the Hoops were a bit light on options in the middle of the park, with Scott Brown having left this summer. Thus, the double signing should be a massive boost for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Postecoglou explains Celtic moves for Hart and McCarthy

As reported by the club’s official website, speaking about the duo, Postecoglou said:

"“I’m delighted that we have signed two top-class players in Joe and James. Both of them have a wealth of experience at both club and international level, and that is something which can only benefit the squad, and I’m looking forward to working with both of them.”"

Both Hart and McCarthy have had their problems in recent times. But it goes without saying that on the top of their games, both are brilliant players and could prove to be massive additions for the club.

When it comes to Hart, he has not been a first-team regular for a team for a while now. But he has top level experience, is a commanding presence in the box and is known for his reflexes. If he can rediscover his form at Parkhead, he could be the first-choice goalkeeper for at least the next few years.

On the other hand, McCarthy has had his injury issues in recent times. But if he can put those behind him, the Republic of Ireland international could be a regular feature in the middle of the park.
