After their disappointing start to the season, it is clear that Celtic need to strengthen in a number of positions across the squad. One of them is right-back.

Both Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed departed the club last season. And Jonjoe Kenny, who was the starting right-back in the second half of the previous campaign, left at the end of the season as well with his loan spell running out.

As a result, Anthony Ralston is the only recognised right-back at the club at this point of time. And while he has done well in the last couple of games, even scoring a wonderful goal against Hearts in the Premiership opening day game, overall he has not shown that he can be the long-term solution in the position.

Thus, the Hoops are expected to make a move for a right-back this summer. And Aurelio Buta is someone that they have been heavily linked with. Recent rumours had even suggested that a move to bring the right-back to Parkhead was very close. But Buta was picked as the starting right-back in Royal Antwerp’s game against KV Kortrijk.

Major twist in Celtic’s transfer chase for Buta

If a move to Parkhead was indeed very close for Buta, would he have been starting for Royal Antwerp considering there is always the risk of injury in football.

Thus, while he might very well be someone who the Hoops have on their transfer radar, a move to Parkhead may not be as close as first thought.

The club need to make some additions quickly though. They have made a disappointing start to the campaign, losing their opening Premiership game of the season at the hands of Hearts and are also out of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers already. And it is not just at right-back that they need to make signings in. Goalkeeper, left-back, centre-back, central midfield, striker and left-wing are all positions that Ange Postecoglou could do with a few more options in.
