It is safe to say that Celtic have made a disappointing start to the season. They are already out of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, having been defeated by FC Midtjylland in the second qualifying round. And they started the Premiership campaign with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Hearts.

Thus, it is clear that Ange Postecoglou’s side have a lot of areas to work on. But the club need to bring in players in a number of positions as well if they are to be competitive in the Premiership title race this season.

One of the areas that has been a worry for the Hoops for a while is their defence. And while they need to strengthen in the full-back areas, they could do with another signing in the heart of the defence as well, with Christopher Jullien yet to return to action from his injury and Carl Starfelt expected to take some time to adjust to the Scottish game.

Gary Cahill is someone that Celtic should consider making a move for this summer. The 35-year-old is a free agent at the moment and has in fact been linked with the Rangers in recent times.

Cahill could be a great short-term fix for Celtic

Cahill has proven himself at all levels. He won the Champions League as well as multiple Premier League titles during his time at Chelsea along with several other trophies. He was also a regular for the England national team at one point of time.

Even at 35 years of age, he has been playing a decent amount of football lately. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he made 20 appearances in the Premier League for Crystal Palace last season, featuring for 1800 minutes.

Thus, without needing to shell out a transfer fee as he is a free agent, a move for Cahill might make a lot of sense. He is someone who can come in and help sort out things at the back at least for the short-term.
