It is safe to say that Vasilis Barkas had made a bright start to pre-season. As a result, there were hopes that he could finally find his feet at Celtic this season and establish himself as the first-team’s number one goalkeeper.

But a few mistakes in his last couple of appearances led to Scott Bain starting the second leg of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie against FC Midtjylland. And he has gotten the nod against Hearts as well.

There are also a lot of rumours about the club making a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Joe Hart. As a result, one has to wonder what the future holds for Barkas at Parkhead.

Journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos tweeted out that Ange Postecoglou’s plans were for Barkas to be number one but after his performance against FC Midtjylland in the first leg, and the Hart rumours, everything is on the table at the moment. And it looks like Celtic could be open to letting him leave on loan.

Could Barkas be set to leave Celtic on loan this summer?

If the Hoops are able to sign a goalkeeper this summer and he finds his feet at Parkhead, Barkas leaving on loan could make a lot of sense for the club.

There were a lot of high expectations when Barkas arrived last summer but at the moment, he appears to be playing with a lack of confidence. A loan spell away could give him the chance to rediscover his form and confidence, playing regular first-team football elsewhere.

And ultimately, he could eventually return to the Hoops, ready to be the number one. But of course, it will all depend on whether the club are first able to sign a goalkeeper in his summer transfer window. They have been heavily linked with Hart recently while the name of Ben Foster has been brought up as well as a possible target.
