Their defeat at the hands of FC Midtjylland meant that Celtic won’t be making the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the fourth straight season. And it became clear that there are a number of positions in the squad that need strengthening. One of them is goalkeeper.

Goalkeeping has been a worry for the Hoops for a while now. Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard all got runs in the first-team last season but none of them were able to completely convince that they were the long-term answer there.

After a difficult debut season in Scottish football, there were hopes that Barkas could rediscover his form in this campaign. But after a bright start in pre-season, he has made mistakes in the last few games.

As a result, it was Bain who started between the posts in the second leg against FC Midtjylland. Thus, it should not come as a surprise if the Hoops ended up making a move for a goalkeeper this summer.

Joe Hart and Ben Foster are two players who have been linked with a move to Parkhead in recent times. While neither of them are in their prime at the moment, both are proven goalkeepers and have represented the England national team in the past.

Most of the rumours have surrounded Hart but recent rumours have suggested that Foster is someone who they are considering as an alternative to the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper.

Foster has fallen behind in the pecking order at Watford in recent times. But as reported by the Daily Record, he is understood to be keen to see out the last year of his contract before finishing his career in America.

Celtic have the ability to offer him first-team football though and if they did end up making a move for the 38-year-old, they’d hope that that could sway him.

Of course, someone like Foster would not be a long-term solution but it does feel like the Hoops are looking for a veteran goalkeeper in this transfer window.
