Celtic have opened talks to sign Tottenham Hotspur star

Over the past few weeks, Celtic’s transfer plans have certainly picked up pace. And they have needed to, considering we are just days away from the start of the Scottish Premiership season and already in the middle of the UEFA Champions League qualifying phase.

There are a lot of positions in the squad where they need to add some depth. But goalkeeping is an area where they have three options in the form of Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard. But none of them have managed to nail down a spot in the first-team yet and show that they are the long-term answer there.

As a result, it should not come as a surprise if they ended up signing another goalkeeper this summer and it looks like they have Joe Hart on their radar.

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, the Hoops have opened talks with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Hart and negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs:

Would Joe Hart be the right signing for Celtic?

At 34 years of age, it is safe to say that Hart will not be a long-term signing for the club. But he might certainly be able to come in and make the first-team position his own for a season or two.

Or perhaps, such a move might be a sign that Celtic still believe that Barkas can eventually find his feet in Scottish football and fulfil his potential. Working with someone with the experience of Hart could help in that regard.

Some might question how Hart would fit into Ange Postecoglou’s style of football. While he is known for his commanding presence in the box and amazing reflexes, his distribution from the back is not his best attribute. He has not been a first-team regular for quiet a few years as well. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Hart made 10 appearances last season, keeping 5 clean sheets in the process of doing so.
