Just when it had looked like Vasilis Barkas was making solid progress at Celtic, with some great saves in pre-season, the goalkeeper has put in a couple of disappointing performances and given rise to questions about his future between the sticks again.

Barkas failed to find his feet in Scottish football last season and dropped down the pecking order behind Scott Bain and Conor Hazard at one point. Under Ange Postecoglou, he started a few pre-season friendlies and was showing good confidence. He was playing well with the ball at his feet and making good saves.

It was looking like he would reclaim the number one position again and he started against FC Midtjylland in midweek. But he put in a shaky performance in that game and conceded a goal he should have done much better with. He made a couple of good saves against West Ham United as well but ended up making a mistake again, leaving a gap on his near post.

As a result, it does feel like the club might have to make a move for a goalkeeper this summer. While Barkas does have potential, he has not shown enough consistency during his time at the club.

Could Anderlecht’s goalkeeper be the answer for Celtic?

As reported by the Daily Record, Anderlecht goalkeeper and captain, Hendrik Van Crombrugge, said:

"“What I like in clubs is tradition. That’s why I love Glasgow Celtic.“If someone tells me one day that I can go and play for them I’ll be off immediately asking ‘where do I sign?’!”"

The goalkeeper has been out of action recently due to a back injury. But he could certainly be an interesting player to consider making a move for this summer. He even made an appearance for the Belgium national team in 2020 and there is no question about his quality.

At 28 years of age, he can be a long-term solution between the posts. His current contract runs till the summer of 2025 though and thus, it might be difficult to bring him to Parkhead this summer.
