While Celtic have made a promising start to the season, the club still need to make additions in a number of positions over the course of the summer transfer window. And one of the things that could be near the top of Ange Postecoglou’s wish list right now is to sign a right-back.

At this point of time, the Hoops possess very little depth in the position. Both Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed left the club last season. Jonjoe Kenny, on loan from Everton, was the first-choice right-back in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign but has also departed with his loan spell coming to an end.

As a result, Anthony Ralston is the only recognised option at right-back in Postecoglou’s squad at the moment but he is yet to show that he can be the long-term solution in the position. Thus, the club signing a new right-back would not come as a surprise.

As reported by Sky Sports, Celtic are interested in signing Manchester City right-back Yan Couto on loan for next season. But they face competition from Portuguese clubs for his signature.

Could Couto be a good signing for Celtic?

Couto is yet to make a senior appearance for Manchester City and spent the previous season on loan at La Liga 2 side, Girona.

He had a promising spell there. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Couto made 30 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 2 goals and providing 5 assists in the process of doing so.

It is clear that Couto has potential. But he turned 19 years of age just last month and has not played top flight football yet. As a result, is he someone that the Hoops could depend on to go into the season as their first-choice right-back?

If the club bring in a more experienced right-back as well as someone like Couto, then it could prove to be a brilliant signing.
