Defence was an area of worry for Celtic last season. The players in the backline struggled for both form and fitness throughout the course of the 2020/21 campaign. And as things stand, options at the back might be even more limited right now than they were last season.

Shane Duffy, Diego Laxalt and Jonjoe Kenny have left with their loan spells coming to an end. Both Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed left last season itself. And Kristoffer Ajer has joined Brentford this summer. On top of that, Christopher Jullien is yet to fully recover from his injury.

Thus, it is clear that the Hoops need to strengthen at the back. They have already signed Osaze Urhoghide and Carl Starfelt, but more signings are needed in defence.

As reported by the Glasgow Times, Celtic have been monitoring Lausanne-Sport’s Moritz Jenz for some time and are eyeing a move for the German defender.

Would Jenz be a good signing for Celtic?

Jenz came through the Fulham youth system but it was after moving to Swiss side, Lausanne-Sport, last year that he established himself in senior football. The club finished sixth in the Swiss Super League last season.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Jenz made 31 appearances for the club last season across all competitions, scoring and assisting once each.

Jenz’s biggest strength is perhaps his versatility. While he has mostly played as a centre-back till now, he is very capable of playing at right-back as well. It is not hard to see why that could make him an attractive option for the Hoops, who need to sign players in both those positions.

Would Jenz be expected to come in and immediately establish himself in the first-team picture? Maybe not. But he is just 22 years of age and can prove to be a great long-term signing for the club, if they can bring him to Parkhead.
