Celtic are expected to sign players in a number of positions over the course of the summer transfer window. One of those is striker.

With just a year left on his current deal, it is very possible that Odsonne Edouard could depart Parkhead this summer. And in that case, the club will definitely need to sign a replacement for the Frenchman, who has been their talisman for a few years now. The 23-year-old has crossed the 20-goal mark in the previous three seasons at Parkhead.

As a result, the Hoops have been linked with several strikers over the past few months. And Rennes’ M’Baye Niang appears to be a player that they are interested in. The French club signed him for a €15 million transfer fee from Torino back in 2019.

Venezia have been heavily linked with Niang recently. But as reported by Football Italia, transfer expert Sebastien Denis says that Celtic are one of the other clubs also interested in him.

Would Niang be a good signing for Celtic?

Niang was one of the most highly-rated youngsters in the world during his time at AC Milan. Since then, he has played for several other clubs but has not managed to quite fulfil his potential yet.

His first two seasons at Rennes, one of which was on loan from Torino, were good. But it was last season that he struggled for form, spent the second half of the campaign away on loan and is now being linked with a transfer exit.

But still just 26 years of age, there is still a lot of time for Niang to fulfil the potential that he clearly possesses. And a club like Celtic, where he will get plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net, could certainly be an attractive option.

Now, it remains to be seen if the Hoops do end up making a move for him. Interestingly, they have been linked with several Rennes players over the course of this summer transfer window.
