There are a number of positions in the Celtic squad which need reinforcements over the course of the summer transfer window. And signing a new right-back might be very near the top of Ange Postecoglou’s wish list.
At this point of time, Anthony Ralston is the only recognised right-back at the club, with both Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed leaving last season and Jonjoe Kenny’s loan spell from Everton coming to an end.
The 22-year-old is yet to show though that he can be the first-choice right-back for the Hoops and as a result, they will be expected to sign a right-back this summer.
Brandon Soppy is someone that they have been heavily linked with in recent months. But it looks like there will be some tough competition for the signature of the highly-rated Rennes youngster. Udinese and Watford also appear to be in the transfer race for the 19-year-old. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted out:
Udinese are not gonna sign Luis Maximiano from Sporting. No agreement. New goalkeeper will be Silvestri from Verona for €3m + €1m bonus. 🧤

Udinese/Watford are also interested in Rennes right back Brandon Soppy [he’s in Celtic list too with Aurelio Buta and George Baldock]. 🏴

Would Soppy be a good signing for Celtic?
There is no doubt about Soppy’s potential. And with just a year left on his current deal, he could be on his way out of Rennes this summer. Would he be the right signing for Celtic at this point of time though?
Soppy is just 19 years of age and according to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 11 appearances for the Rennes first-team till now.
Thus, he does not have a lot of experience under his belt and might take some time to adjust to a new team and league. But then, as we have seen in the recent past with Frimpong, young players can come in and quickly establish themselves as first-team stars as well. That will always vary from player to player.
Now, it remains to be seen whether the Hoops can win the race for Soppy’s signature ahead of the likes of Udinese and Watford.
