Celtic were expected to strengthen their backline through the course of the summer transfer window after their defence was a worry for them throughout the previous campaign. And they have already started to do that.

The club signed Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the transfer window. And now they appear to be closing in on a move for Carl Starfelt.

The Swedish centre-back currently plays for Rubin Kazan and impressed immensely last season, as the side finished fourth in the Russian Premier League and had one of the best defences in the competition. Thus, it is not hard to see why the Hoops would want to sign him.

Now, Rubin Kazan sporting director, Oleg Yarovinsky, has given us an update on the situation. He has insisted that Starfelt has not moved to Celtic yet as the clubs are negotiating and the documents have not been signed. As reported by Sport Box (via 67 Hail Hail), he said:

"“Starfelt has not yet moved to Celtic, but we are negotiating with them.“Until the documents are signed, the transfer has not taken place.”"

Starfelt could be a great signing for Celtic

Starfelt could be a good fit in Ange Postecoglou’s style of football. He is a ball playing centre-back with great passing and is good at defensive duels as well, not giving away fouls easily. Perhaps the only worry about his game will be his aerial ability. Overall though, it would certainly be a very promising signing if the Hoops can get a deal over the line for the 26-year-old.

The club’s transfer plans certainly appear to be picking up pace at the moment. They announced the signing of Liel Abada yesterday and the move for Starfelt appears to be getting very close as well.

Now, it remains to be seen who the club will try to bring in next. They have certainly been linked with quite a few exciting names over the past few days and there are still a number of positions in the squad that need reinforcements.
