Celtic have made a decent start with Ange Postecoglou as their manager, winning two of their three pre-season games till now. But it is clear that there are areas in the squad which need improvements.
They should be aiming to have a stronger back line this season, after defence was a worry for them in the 2020/21 campaign. In this regard, they have already signed Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday and a move for Carl Starfelt appears to be close as well.
But considering the fact that Kristoffer Ajer could very well be on his way out of Parkhead soon, with just a year left on his contract, the club might need to sign another centre-back. And one player they appear to have on their radar is Tottenham Hotspur’s Cameron Carter-Vickers.
As tweeted out by Larry Henry Jr of SBI Soccer a couple of days back, Celtic and Newcastle United are both neck-and-neck in the transfer race for the defender:
Newcastle United and Celtic are both neck-and-neck in the race for #USMNT defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, a source close to the player confirmed today. They are the frontrunners for a permanent transfer, neither is ahead of the other.

Would Carter-Vickers be a good signing for Celtic?
Carter-Vickers has come through the Tottenham Hotspur youth system. But he has not gotten regular minutes at the senior level and has only made four first-team appearances for them, according to stats from Transfermarkt. On the other hand, he has featured for the United States national team on eight occasions.
That does not mean that he does not have experience though. In fact, he has played for six different clubs in the Championship and made over 100 appearances for them combined.
With Ajer rumoured to be closing in on a Parkhead exit, it would make sense for the club to sign someone like Carter-Vickers. After several stints out on loan over multiple clubs in the past few years, some stability is expected to help the United States international improve even further. It is believed that he could be available for a transfer fee of around £5 million.
