There is no questioning that Celtic have a lot to do if they are to catch up with the Rangers in the upcoming season. The Hoops finished 25 points behind Steven Gerrard’s side last season.

Thus, it goes without saying that there was quite a gap between the two Glasgow sides. But it is not a gap that is impossible to cover in a short period of time.

Many would remember that it was Celtic, who had a commanding double digit points lead over the Rangers in the 2019/20 campaign. Thus, we have already seen how quickly things can turn around. And now, it remains to be seen if the Hoops can turn it around in their own favour. Certainly it won’t be easy, but it is definitely not something that cannot be achieved.

One man who will know a lot about turning things around for the Hoops is Martin O’Neill. He himself came to the club back in 2000, with Rangers having won the league by 21 points in the previous campaign. But the manager ended up winning a domestic treble in his very first season with the club. And it does not look like he believes the gap is as massive now as it was back then. As reported by The Herald, he said:

"“I don’t think the gap is as massive as it was in my time.“Only because I don’t believe that Rangers have the calibre of player [that they did]. It’s different generations that you are comparing but I don’t think that the Rangers team of today can compare with that Rangers side of the beginning the century.”"

Celtic need to have a great summer transfer window

Ange Postecoglou certainly has his task cut out for him. He will be expected to steady the ship and start delivering results as quickly as possible for the Hoops.

The new manager does not have a lot of experience in Europe but the early signs surrounding him are certainly very positive. He has also been a winner at most places he has been at till now, which is cause for encouragement and hopefully he can repeat that at Parkhead.

A lot will depend on the summer transfer window though. The Hoops need to make quite a few signings as a number of positions in the squad need reinforcements. If they can make quality signings, it will make Postecoglou’s task easier. Otherwise, it could become even more difficult than it already is.
