After a quiet few days, Celtic have managed to make a breakthrough and look set to bring in what can be considered as their first big signing since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou.

The club have already signed Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide. But both of them are youngsters and might not be ready to come in and immediately establish themselves in the first-team.

The Hoops will need to bring in some experienced players though with the Champions League qualifiers not far away. There are a number of positions in the squad that still need to be filled while the likes of Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie could be headed for the exit door soon.

Amidst all this, Celtic have managed to reach an agreement with Rubin Kazan for Carl Starfelt. Negotiations are completed and the final fee is set to be around €5 million, while personal terms had already been agreed earlier. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted out:

Starfelt can be a great signing for Celtic

Starfelt can be a great fit in Postecoglou’s style of football. He is a ball playing centre-back with some of most impressive passing in the Russian Premier League. He is good at defensive duels too and does not give away fouls easily.

Starfelt had a very impressive 2020/21 campaign, as Rubin Kazan finished fourth in the Russian Premier League, with one of the best defences in the entire league.

The arrival of Starfelt could also give Celtic the opportunity to resolve the future of Ajer, who has only one year left on his current deal. The Hoops are believed to have already rejected big offers for the Norwegian international this summer but that might have been because of the absence of a replacement for him in the squad.

Starfelt could very well be that replacement. At 26 years of age, he has some solid experience, having played top flight football in both Sweden and Russia. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 42 appearances for Rubin Kazan till now. Before that, he played for IF Brommapojkarna and IFK Goteborg. He has also represented the Swedish national team on three occasions.
