There are a number of positions where Celtic must strengthen in over the course of the summer transfer window. But it would not be a surprise, if the Hoops’ defence is one of the first priorities for Ange Postecoglou when it comes to making signings in.

Defence was a worry for the club last season as they struggled for both form and fitness at the back. On top of that, Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed left in the middle of the previous campaign. Jonjoe Kenny, Diego Laxalt and Shane Duffy left at the end of last season when their loan spells came to an end. And Kristoffer Ajer is being linked with a move away with just a year left on his current deal.

Thus, it looks likely that the club will have to make signings at centre-back as well as both full-back positions soon. And they are being linked with Rennes’ Brandon Soppy.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted out that the club are interested in signing the youngster and have opened talks:

Celtic have opened talks for Soppy

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Soppy has made 11 appearances for Rennes till now, playing 722 minutes of football and is considered as one of the most highly-rated young talents at the club right now. While called a left-back in the tweet, he has made most of his appearances playing at right-back till now although he is a very versatile player. But it is believed that his contract is set to run out in the summer of 2022.

As a result, the Ligue 1 side might have to let him leave this summer. Otherwise, he will become a free agent a season later.

Now, it remains to be seen whether the Hoops can bring him to Parkhead. French clubs are believed to be interested in his signature and in the past, he has been linked with the likes of RB Leipzig as well.
