When Ange Postecoglou was appointed as the Celtic manager, one of the first names that cropped up as possible transfer targets for the Hoops in the summer was that of Mat Ryan.

Goalkeeping has been a problem for the club for a while now. Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard were all given runs in the first-team last season. But none of them managed to convince that they were the long-term answer between the posts and make the goalkeeping gloves their own.

As a result, it might not come as a surprise if the Hoops do try to sign a new goalkeeper this summer. And if it was someone with Ryan’s quality, they should be delighted.

Recent rumours had suggested that the Australian might have been closing in on a move to Real Sociedad. But it looks like that might not be the case after all. While speaking with Fox Sports Australia and as reported by Sussex Live, when asked whether he preferred Haggis or Paella, he said:

"“Haggis every day of the week. Nah, at the minute I’m on the fence. I’m not sure what I fancy, what my tastebuds are craving just now. I’ll have to wait and see.”"

Could Celtic sign Ryan this summer?

Ryan has only one year left on his current deal with Brighton & Hove Albion. There is also the fact that he is no longer a first-team regular for them.

In fact, he spent the second half of last season on loan at Arsenal. And although he might not have gotten a lot of first-team opportunities, he did impress whenever he featured for the Premier League giants. As a result, a move away this summer could be possible.

Judging from his comments, it does not look like his future is sorted yet. As a result, the Hoops could still be in the race for his signature.

Postecoglou will know him well from his time as the manager of the Australian national team. Now, it remains to be seen whether the club will decide to make a move for the goalkeeper.
